How to Choose a Web Development Studio That Actually Ships

A practical guide to evaluating web development studios: portfolio signals, process red flags, pricing models, and the questions that surface the truth.

Choosing a web development studio is one of the highest-leverage decisions a founder or marketing lead will make this year. The wrong pick burns six figures and twelve months. The right one compounds for years.

Start with outcomes, not aesthetics

Pretty portfolios are table stakes. What you want to see is measurable impact: conversion lifts, page speed scores, organic traffic growth, revenue attribution. Ask every studio on your shortlist for two case studies with numbers, not adjectives.

Process red flags

If a studio cannot describe their discovery phase in concrete deliverables — sitemap, content matrix, design system, technical spec — they are improvising. Improvisation is fine for a logo. It is catastrophic for a website that needs to rank, convert, and scale.

Pricing models

Fixed-price contracts protect you from scope creep but punish ambiguity. Time-and-materials rewards velocity but requires trust. The hybrid most modern studios use — fixed price per milestone with a clear change-order process — is usually the right answer.

Questions to ask on the first call

  • Who specifically will write the code? Not "our team" — names.
  • What is your handoff process and what documentation do we get?
  • How do you measure success after launch?
  • What happens in month four if we need a change?

A studio that answers these crisply is a studio that has shipped before.
